Day 23 - Savannah, GA to Charleston, SC

Yesterday may have been the official birthday with the free birthday meals.  Today we had the real birthday meals!

Our first meal of the day was lunch.  Mrs. Wilke's has a boarding house.  It is open from 11am to 2pm Monday through Friday.  There is no menu and all tables seat ten people so you get to know your neighbors.   We showed up at 10:25am and the line was already an hour long.

The line at 10:25am.
Our feast!

The meal had at least 20 items in a family format.  It was incredible!  Fried chicken, meatloaf, brisket, andouille sausage, mashed potatoes, lima beans, squash, corn, cabbage, biscuits, corn bread, potato salad, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, rice, okra, candied sweet potatoes, collard greens, black eyed peas, rutabega, cucumbers, chicken and dumplings, and more that I can't remember.  Sweet tea and cobbler or banana pudding were included too.

On top of all that, it was delicious!  In fact, it takes my top spot from Mert's.  I'm not sure how often I would be able to go given the wait, but it was more of an experience than just a meal.  It was well worth it and a must-stop in Savannah.

After lunch we drove to Hilton Head Island.  We were both interested to see it, but there really wasn't much to see.  In fact, there wasn't even anything to take pictures of.  We mainly saw trees.  I did stop to get some exciting jerky, including venison, buffalo, wild boar, and kangaroo!  Ever eaten a kangaroo?

Many animals to eat.

Then it was time for Charleston.  Charleston probably has the most well-preserved southern-style buildings in the country.  We found quite a few!

Three levels of southern charm.

Three stories is a common trend here.

I think you're seeing it now.

OK, I'm done.
Then we went to Isle of Palms, SC where I stayed a few months ago on the beach.  We stayed briefly before heading back to Charleston for dinner.

Erin is pleased with our sunny stop.

I'm guessing kite-surfing is hard.

We had our first upscale dinner of the trip at Slightly North of Broad (SNOB) and Erin was very pleased.  I had my best meal of the trip at lunch and she had hers at dinner.  Her vegetable plate was very extravagant.

View from our table into the kitchen.

Tomato butter bean soup that looks better when the flash doesn't highlight the oil.

Gumbo!

Fancy vegetables.

Banana creme pie with a torched banana on top.

SNOB.
Then it was off to the hotel.  We didn't spend as much time in Charleston as I wanted, but staying late in Savannah was worth it.  Tomorrow I'll document our trip to Wilmington, NC!
