Day 19 - Florida City, FL to Key West, FL

The breakfast at the Travelodge was pretty terrible, but the room was the nicest I've seen from that brand.  This has become a recurring theme on the trip.  We stayed at the cheapest hotels available during my childhood, so I got to know all the worst brands.  Interestingly, most of the brands have refreshed and appear to be a cut above the local independent hotels now.

The only edible item at breakfast.
The drive to Key West was pretty fun.  We saw all sorts of great scenery, but it's all on Erin's phone and she's sleeping.  You'll have to search for pictures of the US Overseas Highway.

We found parking near the post office.  We also found chickens near the post office.

Notice the chickens roaming freely by the post office.  Key West has *many* roaming chickens.

Key Lime of course.

Erin is super excited about the beach!

A classic!

When in Margaritaville...

Nice sunset they have here.
They really like to brag about being far south.

Southernmost hotel.

Southernmost groceries.

Southernmost on the beach hotel.

Southernmost tattoo.
Then we have the fake train trolley that transports people around.

Interesting choice.

Sunset on the pier.

Crazy fire performer in Mallory Square.

Someone got a little too free spirited?

Looking down at Duval Street from a balcony.  Great for people watching!
Sorry the pictures were sort of all over.  The slow wifi forced me to upload them all in one batch while I worked on something else.  You get the idea.

Key West was worth seeing, but we were underwhelmed a bit.  The problem was mostly lofty expectations.  Somehow we hyped it up into this magical destination when it's not all that different from other beach towns.  It's just harder to get to.  It's sort of like Bourbon Street (or 6th street in Austin) mixed with a Caribbean island.  It's overwhelmingly touristy and the beaches are fine, but they're not on par with Curacao or Sint Maarten.

I didn't get to see the Truman Little White House or the Hemingway House due to rain.  I wanted Erin to get some beach time so we went to two different beaches after lunch.  When the rain came, we checked into the hotel and then it was time for dinner and watching the sunset.  I went back to Duval after dropping Erin off to watch the funny people below.  Overall, it was a fun day, but not the highlight of the trip by any means.
